Farming bees is a unique hobby. You share something special with nature. Honey bees are nature’s hand maidens collecting, pollinating and foraging from 1000s of flowers, trees and crops everyday!
As hobbies go, farming bees is not cheap to set up however the experience and immersive journey is quite an adventure that may span years or even decades with the same start up fee.
Beekeeping is relatively expensive to begin with the average starting kit fetching around R5000 or $325 for two bee hives, the protective bee suit and other bee tools you need to safely and successfully farm bees.
When considering the average price of honey being $7 or R90 per 500g honey jar and the average harvest over a year ranges from 15 kilograms to 40 kilograms it takes a few years to recoup that but hobby beekeepers do not usually concern themselves with making the money back. Hobby bee farmers do it for the passion!
